In collaboration with the Government of Canada and Rooftops Canada, Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) is the implementing partner for the Women’s Spaces Project in Uganda. We work in the four peri-urban districts of Kamuli, Kayunga, Mityana and Entebbe. In Uganda the project focuses on three pillars: Paralegals, Municipal Development Forums (MDFs) and the Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM).

As part of the Women’s Spaces Project, SSA Uganda works with community paralegals who liaise with local authorities by training them on Ugandan law and human rights, as well as how to support individuals, primarily women experiencing land and housing rights violations. We also engage Municipal Development Forums, which are groups of various urban sector stakeholders who come together to discuss pertinent urban issues (such as poverty, urban crime, poor infrastructure) and find solutions.

And by training communities on how to utilize the Social Tenure Domain Model, (a pro-poor land information tool) SSA Uganda assists citizens in formalizing land claims and acquiring property titles.
